Texas Health Institute (THI) is honored to become the administrative home and fiscal sponsor for the Hiram Clarke Community Resiliency Project (HCCRP).  The Hiram Clarke community is in Southwest Houston, made up of diverse neighborhoods with single-family homes, schools, churches, and small businesses. Despite its rich diversity, the area often receives less attention than it deserves.

The project utilizes an innovative community-led approach to achieve its mission to unite the Hiram Clarke community, with a focus on enhancing the well-being of youth and families of color through community-led initiatives in Houston, Texas. Funded by the Hogg Foundation and supported by the Prevention Institute, HCCRP is dedicated to fostering positive change in the community by creating space for diverse voices, fostering relationships, and driving systemic change in education-based on community experiences.

“The most fulfilling part of this work has been building relationships with community members and students and creating space for their voices to be heard,” said Jornae Rideaux, MPH, LSSGB, the program manager of the project.

“While we host meetings, events, and initiatives, the most gratifying moments come from the unexpected opportunities to advocate for someone and make a meaningful difference in their lives,” she said.

For the past five years, the project has prioritized 6th-12th grade students of color and their families within the Madison High School feeder pattern, with the goal of ensuring that all individuals have access to quality education, opportunities for growth, and pathways to success.

Among its notable achievements is the completion of the SPARK Park in 2023, which now serves as a vibrant gathering space for families. Additionally, the Youth Advisory Council has engaged over 100 students in leadership and advocacy, highlighting the importance of youth voices in community initiatives.

HCCRP has also successfully strengthened social networks through collaborative events, fostering trust and cooperation among residents and local organizations. As it continues to center resident experiences in its efforts, ongoing support remains essential to sustain these initiatives and adapt to the evolving needs of the Hiram Clarke community.
